Soma RadioSOMA Radio was the brainchild of two men who could see what was obviously a revolution in the making; media distribution over the web. Stephen DaVega, Chair of SBCC's Multimedia Department and George Duarte, Departmental Aide, decided to make SOMA Radio a reality near the end of 2004. After several years of false starts, Ray Hamilton was brought on board as Program Director in 2008 to provide SOMA Radio a new sense of direction and purpose. Ray brings several years broadcast experience in local TV and Radio. With the indispensible help of Devin Neiman and Ryan Alexander who coordinate all technical efforts for the station, Stephen and Ray were able to increase participation of students and increase the total listenership by a factor of 100.
In the years since the inception of SOMA Radio, the world of internet radio has exploded. SOMA Radio was listed on iTunes and Shoutcast in 2008 and can be streamed to any mobile device. The potential reach of SOMA Radio and internet radio cannot by estimated in any quantitative way, but the training that we can provide will be invaluable for the future students who come through our doors.
