IDENTITY THEFT

ATM/Debit Cards
  • Know where your cards are at all times.
  • Keep your PIN a secret.
  • Memorize your PIN.
  • Don’t use address, birth date, phone or social security number as the PIN.
  • Report any loss immediately.
  • Credit Cards
  • Only carry the cards you need.
  • Be cautious about disclosing your account number over the phone or internet.
  • Never put your account number on the outside of a payment envelope or on a postcard.
  • Report any loss immediately.
  • General Information
  • Do not carry your birth certificate or social security card.
  • In a safe place, keep a list and/or photocopy of all your credit cards and bank account numbers and phone numbers of issuing institutions.
  • Report any unauthorized use of your credit card or identity to the Police Department and issuing institution immediately.
  • Order a credit report at least once a year to check for accuracy.
  • PROPERTY THEFT

  • Do not leave property unattended.
  • Keep a record of serial number, brand and model of all property; computer, stereo, T.V.
  • Secure your property when hosting a party.
  • Etch your property with your driver’s license number.
  • Report a theft to the police or if on campus, Campus Security.
  • BIKE THEFT

  • If you live in I.V. register you bike with the UCSB Campus Police.
  • Always secure your bike in a bike rack with a lock.
  • Keep a record of the brand, model and serial number of your bike.
  • If stolen, report this information to Campus Security or police.
  • Keep a lookout for your own bike. If you see it notify the police immediately.
